Insurance 101: INSURANCE CLAIMS

An insurance claim is a formal request from a policyholder (aka you) to their insurance company (us!) asking for a payment after a covered incident, such as a hospital stay, a natural disaster, a vehicular accident or theft. Payout from your insurance provider is intended for expenses related to the covered incident and payment usually only goes to the person on the policy (aka a designated beneficiary).

  • Fire report and/or police investigation report
  • Photographs of the damaged property
  • Statement of loss or inventory
  • Receipts, invoices, and proofs of ownership
  • Witness affidavits, if applicable

You’ll need a few things, including names of people involved in the incident, the date of the incident, your insurance policy number, and finally, an incident, accident and/or medical report. You may also be asked to submit photos of the incident, medical receipts, or repair estimates. Notify NCIA as soon as possible in the event of a claim.

If your claim is approved, you’ll get payment from the insurance company through NCIA. The amount you get depends on your insurance policy and the incident. Payment can be sent via direct deposit, check, or directly to a service provider.

Contact your insurance provider (NCIA) with your policy number and incident details. Submit supporting documents like reports, photos, and receipts. Once evaluated, the claim will be processed and paid out according to your policy terms.
