What to do in a car accident

Car accidents can be scary and can throw even the most experienced driver for a loop. Here’s a rundown of what to do if you ever find yourself in a car accident:

Check yourself and your passengers for injuries
If conscious, check your eyesight, if there is ringing in your head, if you can move your hands and toes, or if you are experiencing any sharp pain or see any wounds. If you or your passengers are injured, call emergency services if you’re able to, or ask a bystander to do so for you. If injured, try not to move and wait until emergency personnel arrive.

Get to safety and call authorities
Before exiting your vehicle, make sure that it is securely parked and you may safely exit. It is also recommended that you turn on your hazard light to alert incoming traffic. Call MMDA through the hotline 136 (or local authorities if not in Metro Manila) so they can file an accident report and document the scene.

Document the accident
To protect yourself, it’s recommended that you note the identity of the officers, take pictures of the accident to share during the claims process, and take down names and information of all parties involved, including any possible witnesses to the accident. If your car is causing a hazard where it is, move your car to the side of the road. If your car is unsafe to drive, leave it where it is and get yourself to a safe place.

Exchange information
Once you’ve confirmed that all parties are unharmed, exchange information with the other driver. Take note of:
  • Driver’s full name and contact information
  • Insurance company and policy number
  • Driver’s license and license plate number
  • Type, color, and model of vehicle
  • Location of the accident
It's recommended that you do not discuss fault when going over the facts with the other driver.

Contact your insurer and start the claims process.
Contact your insurer while you are at the scene to inform them of the accident. Once they are informed, your insurer will be able to inform you of the next steps in the claims process and what to expect.
